Unit 2 Great People

I. Teaching aims and learning objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. Understand the differences between the simple present tense and the present continuous tense, the simple past tense and the past continuous tense, the simple past tense and the present perfect tense;

2. Use the six tenses correctly.

II. Teaching contents

New words and phrases: passage, take part in, the invention of, by hand, in ancient times

III. Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty

Talk about how to learn about the world and the reasons in students’ own words.

IV. Teaching procedures

Step 1 The simple present tense and the present continuous tense

1. Game time: True or False

T: Boys and girls. Do you know your classmates well? Now let’s play a guessing game. Describe yourself, and let your classmates judge true or false.

【设计意图：以游戏方式自然导入时态的复习，激发学生参与课堂的积极性，让他们在真实的语境中运用一般现在时。】

2. Game time: What is he/she doing?

T: Do you like watching the programme Dad, where are we going? I like it very much. Look at this picture. Who is he? Stone. What is Stone doing? Let’s play a guessing game. You can say “Is he shouting?” or “Is he crying?”

【设计意图：由学生喜爱的电视节目《爸爸去哪儿》，引导学生在猜测游戏中复习现在进行时的用法。】

3. The usage of the two tenses

T: Just now we used the simple present tense and the present continuous tense. Now, let’s sum up the usage of the two tenses.

【设计意图：以表格形式帮助学生归纳两个时态的意义和功能。】

4. Finish the exercises on page 26

【设计意图：以教材中的练习帮助学生巩固一般现在时和现在进行时的用法。】

Step 2 The simple past tense and the past continuous tense

1. Express you thanks

T: I want to say thanks to Miss Li. She was my English teacher in junior middle school. I couldn’t pronounce some English sounds well. She helped me patiently. Now I become an English teacher like her.

【设计意图：讲述自己的经历，教师先陈述感谢词，为学生示范。学生模仿运用，向曾经帮助过自己的人说感谢。本环节不仅复习运用了一般过去时，也是一次很好的情感教育。】

T: Talk about the picture, using the past continuous tense.

Step 3 The simple past tense and the present perfect tense.

 1. Sum up the usage

【设计意图：由自由会话引出一般过去时和现在完成时的4个例句，归纳复习两个时态的动词形式和用法。】

2. Work in pairs

T: Work in pairs and talk about each other’s changes in appearances, hobbies, grades, abilities and lifestyles.

【设计意图：以对话形式引导学生谈论各自在外貌、爱好、成绩、能力、生活方式等方面的变化，在对话中复习、运用一般过去时和现在完成时。】

3. Finish the exercises on page 28

4. Test yourself

T: Find out one mistake in the sentence and correct it.

5. Short verbs and continuous verbs

6. Complete a passage

T: Complete the passage with the correct tenses of the verbs be, buy, read, see, show, dream, go, be.

【设计意图：通过改错练习引导学生注意非延续性动词和延续性动词的用法，带领学生归纳非延续性动词所对应的延续性动词，再以动词填空的形式加以巩固。】

7. Talk about your holidays

T: Talk about your holidays. Try to use the simple past tense and the present perfect tense in your dialogue as much as possible.

(1) Where did you go during the winter holidays?

    (2) When did you go?

    (3) How long did you stay there?

    (4) How many times have you been to the place?

    (5) What do you think of your trip?

【设计意图：以两两对话谈论寒假，引导学生尽可能多地使用一般过去时和现在完成时。让学生谈论自己生活中的事情很重要，可确保每一个学生都有话可说。】

Step 4 Writing

T: Write about your school life and your changes. Try to use the six tenses properly.

【设计意图：以书面表达的形式继续帮助学生巩固各种时态的用法，培养他们的写作能力。】

V. Homework

Nanjing Travel Agency (旅行社) is looking for a guide. Write a self-recommendation letter (自荐信). Don’t forget to use proper tenses in your letter.
